When I Was One And Twenty

from Brookland Voices by David A. Harley

/

about

This is the lyric that was previously yoked to 'When I Was In Love With You', though its mood is very different. Interestingly, both the theme and the lyrical structure have much in common with Yeats's ''Down By The Salley Gardens', which is based on a traditional song.

Both lyrics come from 'A Shropshire Lad'. Whereas 'When I Was In Love With You' is sung on this album unaccompanied, 'When I Was One And Twenty' retains the quasi-orchestral introduction and guitar accompaniment from the version on 'Tears of Morning', though remastered.

lyrics

A Shropshire Lad XIII

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
'Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.'
But I was one-and-twenty
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
'Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.'
And I am two-and-twenty
And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.
