Blackwaterside

from Still In Free Fall by David A. Harley

about

I've never felt comfortable with the vocal range of this traditional song, usually assumed to be Irish, but a few years ago I tried it out with my one-time singing partner Sally Goddard (best-known recently for her work with the Canadian band Atlantic Union, who have previously recorded it), as well as kicking some ideas around with The Ashen (Andi Lee) who has recorded his own version. Sally and I may yet get to perform it in public, but in the meantime here's an approximation to that instrumental arrangement.

This tune is best known via Anne Briggs and Bert Jansch (the least said about Jimmy Page in this context the better!), but this arrangement owes more to Davy Graham, sytlistically, though I'm not aware that he ever recorded it. In any case, I've always tended to dilute any Eastern tendencies with inauthentic harmonies whenever I've leaned in that direction. And quite happy to do so. :)
