Wearing Out My Shoes

from Dinosaur Tracks by David A. Harley

/

about

Perhaps my least original song ever: the lyric adapts a couple of floating verses from several old blues tunes, there's a bit of vocal that sounds alarmingly like Bert Jansch in a rare moment of bluesiness, and the guitar part lies somewhere in spirit between Davy Graham and John Renbourn with a smidgen of Wizz Jones. But I was very young. It's a very trebly version, but I haven't been able to replicate the fluency of that guitar part in recent years.

lyrics

There's no future in singing the blues
I guess I'll leave, I've got nothing to lose
Wearing out my shoes, walking away from you
And if I can't walk, I guess I'll fly...

I went down to the depot, looked up on the board:
It said 'Good times here, but better down the road'
Wearing out my shoes walking away from you
And if I can't walk I guess I'll fly

Going down to the crossroads, my cap in my hand
Looking for a woman that's looking for a man
And wearing out my shoes walking away from you
And if I can't walk I guess I'll fly, bye bye
