about

This isn't a song I'd feel comfortable singing, but I rather like the tune. Very similar words were published in Harpers Magazine in 1871 as 'Loving, But Unloved' and credited to Francis Behrynge. If those were the original words, though, they've changed significantly by and during the 20th century.

The origins of the tune are obscure, though all the versions I've heard seem to derive from the singing of May Kennedy McCord, who first heard it in 1900 or thereabouts. The harmony played by the second slide guitar in verse two actually reflects the fact that in the 60s I heard a version that sounded like a harmony to the tune sung by Joan Baez on a 60s recording.
